Brighton Mvumi biography

Brighton Mvumi is a Professor at the University of Zimbabwe. His areas of specialization include postharvest science and technology, agro-processing, stored product entomology, food loss and waste, pesticides and the environment, food safety, organic agriculture, integrated pest management, agricultural innovation systems and climate change adaptation and food security in sub-Saharan Africa smallholder agriculture.

Before joining the University of Zimbabwe in 2000, Brighton worked for the Ministry of Agriculture in Zimbabwe for 10 years. He has extensive experience in the capacity development of young scientists through reviewing postgraduate research proposals and supervision.

Brighton has led a number of collaborative national and international agricultural research and development projects over the past 26 years, including the implementation and review of DFID’s 11-year (1995-2006) Crop Post-Harvest Programme in Southern Africa as a founding Steering Committee Member. Currently, he is a core-team member and network coordinator of the  African Postharvest Losses Information System (APHLIS), a network for the estimation of cereal, legume and root & tuber weight losses in sub-Saharan Africa. He has also contributed towards the development of international physical and nutritional postharvest loss estimation methodologies and the FAO Food Loss Assessment Methodology.

Brighton received his Ph.D. from Natural Resource Institute of the University of Greenwich, UK.
