Tanya Stathers biography

Tanya Stathers has worked as a research scientist for the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) of the University of Greenwich since 1998, based in East Africa and the UK.

Her research focuses on smallholder agri-food systems across sub-Saharan Africa with an emphasis on postharvest systems and the reduction and quantification of postharvest food losses of staple grain and root and tuber crops. Her research interests also include agricultural innovation systems, agricultural adaptation to climate change, the rural-urban interdependencies and gender and diversity aspects of agri-food systems, poverty impacts of market standards, and experiential learning processes and tools.

Her Ph.D focused on smallholder food security in sub-Saharan Africa, she also holds a certificate in development-oriented research in agriculture, an MSc in crop protection, and two postgraduate teaching certificates. Prior to joining NRI, she worked as a crop protection entomologist at the Cocoa and Coconut Research Institute, Papua New Guinea (1997-98) and at Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute, Tanzania (1993-95).
